Multilingual Subtitles for Short Dramas: 15 Interface Languages and How to Switch Subtitles

HONG LUO's interface and subtitles are each available in 15 languages. Subtitles follow the site language by default and can be switched or turned off in the player at any time, while dubbing is available in Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Thai and Malay. The languages offered for each episode depend on that episode.

HONG LUO's site interface and player subtitles each support 15 languages, including Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean. During playback, subtitles follow your current site language by default, and viewers can choose another language or turn subtitles off in the player's subtitle menu. Dubbing is offered separately in five languages (Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Thai and Malay), so viewers can listen to the audio in another language.

15 Languages for the Interface and Subtitles

The languages currently available, in order, are Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Spanish, Malay, Polish, Serbian, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Ukrainian and Korean. The interface and subtitles use the same set of languages, but which subtitles each episode actually provides depends on that episode.

Traditional and Simplified Chinese subtitles are two separate sets and cannot be converted into each other, so choose the script you prefer. Each interface language has its own web address, so search engines can index them separately. Arabic is displayed from right to left in both the interface and the subtitles.

The first time you visit, the site sets an interface language based on your browser's language setting and connection region. If you later choose a language manually from the globe icon at the top of the site (labeled 'Language'), that choice is remembered on your next visit.

How Subtitles Are Chosen Automatically

Subtitles follow these default rules:

  • Subtitles first show the same language as the site interface. For example, if the site is in English and the episode has English subtitles, English is displayed directly. If your browser language is Arabic, Ukrainian or Korean, and the episode has subtitles in that language while its picture has no burned-in subtitles, that language is shown first by default.
  • If an episode has no subtitles in the site language and its picture has no burned-in subtitles, the player switches to the other subtitle languages the episode provides.
  • Some episodes already have subtitles burned into the picture in the same language as the site. In that case the player does not add a second subtitle track in that language, so the screen does not show the same text twice.
  • If an episode has no subtitles at all, the subtitle button does not appear, and the episode plays with its original picture and sound only.

Switching Subtitles in the Player

  1. After playback starts, find the 'Subtitles' button on the right side of the player. This button appears only when the episode has subtitles.
  2. Open the menu and choose the language you want to display, or choose 'Off' to hide subtitles.
  3. Your choice takes effect immediately, without refreshing the page.
  4. Your choice is stored in this device's browser, so it is kept the next time you play on the same device, and you do not need to sign in. If your browser blocks site data, the choice cannot be remembered, but playback is not affected.

Dubbing: Listening in Another Language

Dubbing and subtitles are set separately. Tap the player's 'Dubbing' button to switch between the original audio and the dubbing the episode provides. The dubbing languages currently available are Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Thai and Malay. The original audio plays by default, and if the episode does not have the dubbing you chose, the original audio continues to play. The dubbing language you choose is also remembered on this device. Dubbing and subtitles do not affect each other, so you can listen to one language's dubbing while showing subtitles in another.
